- How to hide the “seen” checkmarks on your WhatsApp messages - August 30, 2025
We’ve all been there: you open a message on WhatsApp, glance at it, and then instantly regret it. Those two little blue ticks now give you away, and suddenly there’s pressure to reply right away. But what if you could read your texts without announcing it to the world? Thankfully, WhatsApp gives you just that option.
Why you might want to turn off “seen”
Sometimes you’re simply not in the mood to respond immediately. Maybe you’re at work, maybe you’re juggling dinner, or maybe you just don’t want to start a conversation right that second. The blue checkmarks make that difficult — they act like a digital receipt confirming you’ve opened the chat.
By disabling them, you gain a little more privacy. You can read messages at your own pace without feeling rushed. Of course, it comes with a catch: if you hide your “seen” status, you also won’t be able to see when others have read your messages.
How to disable read receipts
WhatsApp has three built-in signals for your messages:
- One gray check means your text was sent.
- Two gray checks mean it was delivered.
- Two blue checks mean it was delivered and read.
It’s that last one you can turn off. Here’s how:
- On the WhatsApp home screen, tap the menu button (three dots in the top right).
- Go to Settings.
- Select Account.
- Open Privacy.
- Uncheck the box for Read Receipts.

From that moment on, your contacts will only ever see the gray checks. They’ll know the message was delivered, but they’ll never know if you’ve opened it.
Why your checkmarks aren’t blue
Not all checkmarks mean the same thing. A double blue checkmark confirms the recipient saw your message. Two gray ones mean it was received but not read (or that the other person also turned off read receipts). A single gray check means it was sent but hasn’t reached the phone yet — possibly because the contact is offline.
More ways to control your privacy
This isn’t the only trick in WhatsApp’s settings. You can also hide your online status so people don’t see when you’re active, or control who can view your profile photo and last seen time. Other messaging apps, like Facebook Messenger, also have ways to read a message without triggering the dreaded “seen” notification.
Sometimes, the best part of these features isn’t secrecy — it’s peace of mind. By tweaking a few privacy settings, you can enjoy conversations on your own terms, without feeling chained to those little blue ticks.
